If
your monitor’s brightness, contrast, and Gamma-correction settings are correct you
should see 17 distinct bands (1=pure white, 17=pure black, and 2…16=shades of grey)
in the picture below. You should adjust your monitor’s brightness, contrast,
and Gamma-correction settings till you see 17 distinct bands.
Most LCD/TFT/plasma displays will correctly show the 17 bands distinctly throughout their lifetime. However, old/inferior CRT monitors (especially those which have reached the end of their useful life) may not show the 17 bands distinctly. Such monitors are not capable of reproducing digital pictures with high fidelity.
